Last Friday we had our Squash and Racketball 2025 tournament. It was the most successful tournament in the history of Purley Squash Club. We had over sixty entrants entering multiple events, resulting in over one hundred entries. A very positive aspect was the introduction of a ladies event which we haven’t been able to do for years. The event was held over several weeks culminating in the finals last Friday. Given the number of emails and texts received by the organisers, extoling and praising the tournament, it seems that everyone enjoyed participating in it. The finals night itself was a roaring success with not only the participants attending, but also a large number of spectators enjoying the evening.

The squash and racketball were both keenly played by everyone. The standard of the competition in the finals was remarkable, with the Open event level of skills leaving all the spectators in awe. The overall winner was the defending champion John Betts who was also instrumental in the event’s organisation.

Obviously the tournament could not have been a success without multiple contributions from many people. A big thanks must go to the Squash Committee itself for the organisation of the tournament. A further, and additional big thanks is for Alan Page, managing director of CPN Financial Services, a local financial advisor, who contributed a substantial amount of money to provide trophies and prizes. And, of course, the buffet on finals night was provided by Lucy’s kitchen and was typically of the high standard Lucy always provides. Last but not least the biggest thanks goes to all the participants without whom the tournament would not have been as successful as it was.

We hope that any future tournaments such as the doubles and team events retain the momentum and have as many keen participants as this one had.
